I did not have a difficult time breastfeeding Matthew. Matthew was what they call, a textbook baby; he followed the schedules in Gina Ford's The New Contented Little Baby Book almost to the tee. The only hiccup was that I couldn't breastfeed right from the start because he was admitted to NICU for congential pneumonia. After the initial latch-on which left me with sore, bleeding nipples, it was smooth sailing from then on and I breastfed him up to 17 months old.
I thought and hope that it would as easy with Joanne. I was wrong! First, my C-section recovery was not as smooth and as painless as the first time round. Second, though I could latch her on easily, she is an impatient baby. She CHOMPS on my nipples and I ended up with sore, cracked bleeding nipples. I resorted to pumping, instead of latching her on, so that my poor nipples could recover properly. It took me a week to recover. Thanks to Auntie Jan for her breastshells and Medela Purelan 100. Third, she SCREAMS. When she's hungry, she screams and screams till her whole face is red and would only stop when my nipple or the bottle teat is in her mouth.
I have been pumping 3-4x a day, to give her bottle at night feeds (so that she won't scream the house down). I'm running out of storage space for my frozen ebm. Anybody wants? Too precious to pour away. I guess it's time to call NUH and TMC NICU to ask if any premature baby wants ebm.
